And if I then asked if you feel like there’s a level beyond where you are, and if so, would you like to reach it? What would you answer then?

If you’re like most founders, your answer to the first question would be a bumbling “uh… probably fine?”, and your answer to the second a resounding “YES”.

To make it easier for my clients to gauge their performance level, I have created a short assessment that tells them where they stand on the three most important pillars of company performance: Strategy, Management, and Self-Aware Leadership.

Each is crucial for a company to truly flourish.

  • Without a good strategy, your team has no guidance with which to approach challenges and opportunities.
  • Without good management, even the best strategy is doomed to fail, and issues are likely to “fail upward”, requiring the constant attention of the CEO and his team.
  • And without self-aware leadership, well… not much else matters, because you’ll likely be repeating the same mistakes, over and over.

I ask all my clients to do this assessment, which serves as a benchmark for the hard-won improvements we’ll gain while working together. When they do the test again later, they can see exactly how far they’ve come.
